Sekoya Bighorn Sekoya is already making strides—mental and physical—to help her people. She is a basketball star, devoted to her workouts, and a physical education major at United Tribes Technical College in North Dakota. Sekoyah claims not to be the most traditional or cultural Indian, but she does know how to skin and prepare an elk or write in Lakota, her Native language, and is learning more about it through a tribal college education. Once she has completed her degree, Sekoyah wants to return home to the Rocky Boy Reservation in Montana to work as a local fitness trainer in a wellness center. Her goal is to teach her people about the connection between physical activity, traditional lifeways, and diabetes prevention and cure. |
